98. Homage to wooden spoons
I have a collection of wooden spoons – more an acquirement actually as I just cannot resist buying them wherever I go. They just accumulate. Their provenance is not important. I like them because they are pretty and pleasant to eat from.
Of all them, my favourite is this tiny Japanese spoon hand carved from a splinter of bamboo. It’s used to reach into little jars of spicy yuzu kosho or to scoop up a bit of potent karashi mustard.
Somehow, in Western aesthetics we made form and function, utility and beauty, antonyms. We should have checked out this spoon first.
